there were times
moments walking down my road
times I felt the grace of God
a smile that called me out to play
a word that brightened up my day
a secret kiss
romance’s bliss
unexpected thoughtfulness
a voice divine
a view sublime
a dream of peace for all mankind
lying warm
in life’s winter sun
I know
there were times
when I was dearly loved

First Snow
first snow
white oblivion
whispers
to sleeping earth
hush…
let go
frantic mind
surrender
hush…
forgive your past
your sins
your separation
hush…
a blanket
of serenity
hush
white oblivion
cuddles me
in love’s eternity
first snow
melts,
drips
slowly
down the face
of my soul
hush…

Breaking Trail
in winter stillness
ancient aspens watch
a chickadee flitting past
feathered music
bouncing
over infinite blue
alone
atop the buried meadow
a man paused
turned
looked back at the trampled snow
the trail of footsteps
each print a shadowed testament
to sweat falling from his brow
all he could see was white
reflected memories in a sea of snow
light’s harsh truth
stinging weary eyes
a deep sigh
a gasp of icy air
a hesitation in the heartbeat of being
a smile
he chooses life
again

hibernation
an eye opens
grey
no bright light
no sunshine
a dark, gray, day
deep in the cozy comfort of warm blankets
I snuggle
the mind stirs
no “to do” list
no appointments to miss
the eye closes
I choose hibernation
again

Hotel Hypothermia
it was a trip mistaken
for a family vacation
a time so cold
my bones grew old
bundled up in layers of clothes
all that showed my bright red nose
even when I went to bed
I never shed a single thread
I wonder how eskimos have sex
queried my now recent ex
pounds of fat fell off of me
as I shivered constantly
take a shower?
I think not
in water that was icy hot
and when at night I had to pee
a new resolve came over me
as toes touched the icy floor
I hurtled towards the bathroom door
and in a fit of urgency
dropped my shorts
but woe to me
the thing that used to flow so free
had shrunk down to
a tiny pea
and so it went from day to night
with not a hint of warmth in sight
until we had to say goodbye
a moment when I nearly cried
afflicted now with freezer phobia
I bid adieu,
God Bless
