there is a porch
in my mind’s quiet place
broad
shaded
open
here I sit looking out
listening
enjoying
sounds and thoughts waving
in the gentle breeze of memories
in my garden of words

at last
said the flower to the bee
you’re back, my friend
come dance with me
two birds lit upon a tree
it spoke
please stay
come nest with me
sprouts sprang from sun baked earth
eggs erupted into birth
shutters opened
windows wide
I harkened
to the din outside
the roar of life
is here again
Spring’s voices calling
let’s begin

for the first time
in seeming months
we sat at water’s edge
mesmerized by stillness
listening
to the gentle lap of waves
feeling the warmth
of afternoon sun
slowly melt our frozen souls
shadows passed
as geese honked overhead
laughing children scurried by
Ah…
I heard a voice within
at last,
there is hope again

Dirty Snow
there are days
sometimes weeks or more
when my spirit knows
that the purity of newness
the first flakes of snow
have been trampled
discolored
covered in ash and fallen smog
and life
my daily exercise
becomes a journey
of hope and expectation
waiting for the magic moment
when sun reveals
a patch of sparkling green
from beneath
dirty snow

a bright Spring day
after weeks of grey
students spilling
out to play
Blasts of sun
clothes undone
smiles and screams
and naked fun
a writhing mass
my eyes aghast
I even saw
a bare white ass
but Came the clouds
and then wet rain
Seattle weather
once again

the cave dwellers stirred
doors cracked
light and warmth crept inside
the sun, long unseen
reappeared
cautious toes inched out
pale faces squinted
fists rubbed dazzled eyes
lips curled with wonder
smiled
voices murmured
chorused
hallelujah!
a zombies’ reunion
winterend
