My Garden of Words

there is a porch
in my mind’s quiet place
broad, shaded, open
where I sit and look out
at my garden of words

listening
enjoying
watching words waving
in the gentle breeze of memories
each seed
an echo

of planting
caring
weeding
hoping

waiting

wondering

would faith be rewarded
would something glorious appear

sometimes
unexpected beauty blossomed
sometimes
no matter the effort expended
new life never sprouted

yet still I garden with words
planting, caring, hoping
sitting on my porch each day
marveling at the miracle
of creativity

Spring’s Voices

at last
said the flower to the bee
you’re back, my friend
come dance with me

two birds lit upon a tree
it spoke
please stay
come nest with me

sprouts sprang from sun baked earth
eggs erupted into birth

shutters opened
windows wide
I harkened
to the din outside

the roar of life

is here again
Spring’s voices calling
let’s begin

Afternoon Sun

for the first time
in seeming months
we sat at water’s edge
mesmerized by stillness
listening
to the gentle lap of waves
feeling the warmth
of afternoon sun
slowly melt our frozen souls

shadows passed
as geese honked overhead
laughing children scurried by

Ah…
I heard a voice within

at last,
there is hope again

Dirty Snow

Dirty Snow
there are days
sometimes weeks or more
when my spirit knows
that the purity of newness
the first flakes of snow
have been trampled
discolored
covered in ash and fallen smog
and life
my daily exercise
becomes a journey
of hope and expectation
waiting for the magic moment
when sun reveals
a patch of sparkling green
from beneath
dirty snow

Seattle Sun

a bright Spring day
after weeks of grey
students spilling
out to play

Blasts of sun
clothes undone
smiles and screams
and naked fun

a writhing mass
my eyes aghast
I even saw
a bare white ass

but Came the clouds
and then wet rain

Seattle weather
once again

winterend

the cave dwellers stirred

doors cracked

light and warmth crept inside

the sun, long unseen

reappeared

cautious toes inched out

pale faces squinted

fists rubbed dazzled eyes

lips curled with wonder

smiled

voices murmured

chorused

hallelujah!

a zombies’ reunion

winterend
