Breaking Trail

the eyes of ancient aspens
watched in winter silence
as the chickadee flitted past
a feathered dot
bouncing
across sky blue infinity

alone
atop the buried meadow
he paused
turned
looked back at the trail of footsteps
each print a shadowy testament
to the sweat dripping from his brow

memories flushed his face

all he could see was white
light’s harsh truth
reflections from a sea of snow
penetrating
weary eyes

a sigh

a deep breath of icy air
a hesitation in the heartbeat of being
exhalation

alone
he chose
again
